Netball Association of Malawi interim committee inherits projects

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) interim committee faces a race against time to restore the association’s battered image by putting its house in order to prepare both senior and junior teams for major events.

The association will today continue with its brand rebuilding exercise when it holds extra-ordinary general meeting (EGM) at Malawi Sun Hotel in Blantyre to fill three vacant posts.

Delegates are keen to see who will fill the void as Nam has an eye for international tournaments having adopted all the programmes from the previous administration following its sudden resignation, with a year left of its term.

Mulanje District Netball Committee Chairperson Steve Nyadira said it does not want to pile pressure on the interim committee but want the new leaders to restore the sport’s battered reputation.

“As delegates, we took to task the previous committee for its actions. Now that the issue is gone we are looking forward to what the new committee has in store for the sport,” Nyadira said.

Nyadira was the chairperson for concerned affiliates which petitioned the previous committee, culminating into its stepping down.

KAUMA—We have inherited all commitments

Nam interim General Secretary Yamikani Kauma said they have inherited a number of assignments including Malawi Under 21 and senior national netball team commitments to ensure successful participation.

“In terms of the national team we have inherited all commitments including the Test Series slated for November in South Africa. The junior Queens must also start preparations for the 2025 Youth Netball World Cup.

“We also have the Region 5 Youth Games in Namibia 2025, including frequent local camping in between the test series. Besides that we also have Cosana Games later in the year and other international test series for next year,” Kauma said.

Kauma said the interim committee will outline its strategy when all the positions are filled.

“We are still in the planning stages, key being finalising handovers from the old exco [executive committee] and also liaising with Malawi National Council of Sports,” Kauma said.

Meanwhile, five people are vying for various Nam posts.

Former Malawi Queens shooter Linda Magombo will face Lumbani Mtonyo for the post of vice president with Charity Gondwe taking on Paul Kamphala for the position of Vice General Secretary. Anna Kaphale is the sole candidate for the post of vice treasurer even though reports indicated that another aspirant has shown interest.
