Plascon Paint, Hammers set for sponsorship launch

Plascon Paint and 2024 Castel Challenge Cup runners-up Mzuzu City Hammers are set to launch their partnership at Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel today.

The partnership includes a direct financial sponsorship of K40 million.

Plascon Paint is also expected to unveil sets of uniforms for the TNM Super League side.

The company’s general manager Yotamu Katumbi said they expected their ties to grow from strength to strength.

Katumbi said they had entered the partnership with good intentions of helping the team to do better than before.

“We want the team to get stronger and win as many matches as possible. We want the young players to feel at home and get contented with playing for the club. This will be our motivation for a stronger partnership between us and the club.

“We want to assure football lovers in general, and Mzuzu City Hammers fans in particular, that with Plascon on board, they should expect more fun, stronger partnership and exciting games. Plascon is a world-class paint brand and we want to impart the same in Mzuzu City Hammers,” Katumbi said.

Hammers patron Gift Mkandawire said the sponsorship would ease their financial woes.

Mkandawire said the sponsorship launch would mark the beginning of a new chapter at the club.

“This sponsorship is a huge push to our club. The injection of K40 million will enable us to meet most obligations that we have, including salaries for our players and staff. The initial agreement is for one year but there has been a promise for longer and bigger times ahead,” he said.

Plascon Paint and Hammers ventured into a sponsorship agreement on April 5 in a deal that will also see the paint manufacturers giving player-of-the-match awards in Hammers’ league or cup matches.

Over the years, Hammers have brought out some of the best talent on the local scene with big teams such as FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Silver Strikers scrambling for the team’s players every season.

Some of the players who were signed by the giants from Hammers are Isaac Msiska, Chancy Mtete, Blessings Singini, Chikumbutso Henderson, Chawanangwa Gumbo, Patrick Mwaungulu, Gift Chunga, Nanson Mbewe and Wongani Lungu.

Hammers had a memorable run in the Castel Challenge Cup last season, when they went all the way after pushing aside big teams such as Bullets, before going down 1-0 to Wanderers in the final.
