Malawi Under-19women’s squad one step away from elite division

Malawi Under-19 Women’s Cricket squad must beat Lesotho Monday in the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional Qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda, to be promoted to Africa Division One.

The side has been in imperious form, winning four successive matches to top Division Two ladder with eight points.

Malawi continued with their perfect start Sunday when they beat Botswana by 103 runs.

NAMED PLAYER OF THE MATCH TWICE—Kudimba

Mercy Kudimba was voted player of the match after contributing 88 runs.

In all the four matches, Malawi players have won the player of the match accolade.

Cricket Malawi Head of Cricket Operations, Arjun Menon, said they were taking each game at a time in their mission to join the elite division, which has teams such as Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.

“One more win, then we qualify for Division. Two more wins we will be crowned champions of the qualifiers and qualify as top-place team,” Menon said ahead of today’s match against Lesotho.

Malawi will conclude the campaign Tuesday with a game against Kenya.

“It would be nice to win all six matches and be crowned champions of the Division Two qualifiers obviously,” Menon said.

In their opening match against eSwatini on Wednesday, Malawi won by nine wickets, with Eve Kabwere winning the player of the match award after scoring six wickets.

On the same day, Malawi defeated Sierra Leone by eight wickets. Kudimba was also named player of the match after contributing 36 runs.

Malawi continued with the winning start on Thursday, when the side defeated Mozambique by 10 wickets.

Lucy Malino was voted player of the match after supplying three wickets, six runs and four overs.
