Authorities say a multi-billion kwacha Salima-Lilongwe water project is on track as it has reached 29% completion in just six months of practical implementation.
Currently works are ongoing at all four sites namely; Lifuwu along Lake Malawi where there is an abstraction point and a water treatment plant, Katengeza, Mvera and Chezi also known as Dowa turn-off.
This will be followed by a 120 kilometres stretch pipeline.

Speaking to MIJ Online Tinofirei Mawanza, Project Engineer for Khato Civils said that the first phase is expected to start supplying water to people in Salima District by March 2026 with the entire project set to be completed by December 2026.
Mawanza attributed the progress to effective planning and execution, noting that the project is being implemented in phases to support thousands of people with sustainable clean water from Salima to Lilongwe.
Meanwhile, Liana Chapota Munthali, Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, expressed delight with the project’s progress, describing it as a “game changer” that will solve water challenges in Salima, Dowa, Lilongwe and surrounding areas.
