Kuhes invests K171 million in sports medicine equipment

By Llywellenie Mpasa:

Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) Sports Complex has invested K171 million in purchasing sports medicine equipment and establishing a physiotherapy clinic to enhance local athletes’ performance and reduce injury complications, officials have said.

Speaking at a press briefing in Blantyre on Monday, Sports Complex General Manager George Chitunga said the development was aimed at bridging the gap in athlete management and performance enhancement.

“As a High Performance Centre (HPC), we have a role to play in helping in athlete management. The investment in sports medicine aims to serve that purpose,” Chitunga said.

Chitunga highlighted concerns about athletes collapsing during sports activities due to lack of knowledge about their cardiovascular health.

“We have cases where people collapse because they do not know how their cardiovascular system functions, in terms of heart rate, fat levels and bone strength. We have come in to bridge that gap,” he said.

He added that the initiative would help local athletes compete at international level.

“Malawi has participated in many competitions but rarely wins medals. This investment will help our athletes develop and enhance their performance to meet international standards,” he said

Kuhes Sports Complex Sports Administration Manager Geoffrey Biya echoed Chitunga’s sentiments, emphasising the importance of sports science in improving performance.

“If sports associations and clubs fail to embrace sports science, Malawian athletes will continue to struggle,” Biya said.

Physiotherapist Lydia John said the investment in sports medicine was expected to revolutionise athlete management in Malawi, promoting better performance and reducing injury risks.
