Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Fleetwood Haiya has said the association has re-engaged the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) to re-establish another memorandum of understanding (MoU) following the collapse of the initial one, which was signed in 2017.
Haiya said the association took advantage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations draw to explore the opportunity of establishing another MoU to improve football in Malawi by learning from Morocco’s success.
“The Morocco MoU is tagged to foster bilateral support for football development. One of the areas is technical development support.
“This support will help in developing the capacity of our technicians through training and mentorship programmes for coaches and technical staff, including analysts who are critical for the modern game,” he said.
Haiya said the MoU would also help in football infrastructure.
There is also hope that it would facilitate the organisation of football matches and football camps for national teams across all ages.
“Through the MoU, there will be promotion of youth and women’s football,” he said.
During the failed 2017 MoU, Fam signed a three-year deal with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (RMFF) worth $5 million (K3.5 billion) for the construction of Lilongwe Technical Centre, which is adjacent to Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
According to the agreement, RMFF was expected to construct the centre, which would have consisted of a 50- bed hostel, an artificial turf, medical centre and kitchen.
