The Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has directed that all regional football associations must hold elective general assemblies by February 28, 2025.
This is according to a letter from Fam, dated January 6, 2025, addressed to all regional football associations.
“Fam wishes to advise the electoral processes as prescribed in respective statutes of the Regional Football Association should be adhered to in the strictest sense to prevent being challenged.
“Fam recognises the fact that elections in the previous processes were delayed by a restriction order that was issued by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and that there is need for alignment to ensure smooth transition between seasons,” the letter which Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda has signed, reads.
The letter adds that this guidance is aimed at ensuring the new season’s office bearers have ample time to prepare for the new football season.
The Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) has already announced that it will elect new office bearers on February 15 in Mzuzu.
Currently, NRFA General Secretary Masiya Nyasulu is challenging incumbent Chairperson Chauka Mwasinga.
Southern Region Football Association (Chairperson Raphael Humba said his association would comply with the directive in line with Fam statutes.
“As the executive committee, we will meet and decide the exact dates for the polls. But we will comply,” Humba said.
When asked if he would seek re-election, Humba said he would announce his decision after meeting with the executive committee.
On his part, Central Region Football Association Chairperson Austin Ajawa said the committee would meet this weekend to decide on the matter.
“The matter will be discussed during the meeting this week,” Ajawa said.
The newly formed regional body, the Eastern Region Football Association, is also expected to elect new office bearers.
Regional associations will be going to the polls over a year after Fam elections that saw member associations replace Walter Nyamilandu with Fleetwood Haiya.
