Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Fleetwood Haiya has joined fellow Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) member association presidents in endorsing Confederation of African (Caf) president Patrice Motsepe’s re-election bid.
Caf is expected to go to the polls in March next year at a yet-to-be-announced venue.
Haiya met his Cosafa counterparts at South Africa Football Association’s (Safa) offices in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
“Dr. Motsepe has demonstrated exemplary and sound leadership since 2021. His leadership has, among others, brought significant progress to African football. This has not only been in the financial aspect but also in overall development programmes.
“Caf has overseen the launch of new football initiatives such as the Caf Schools’ Competition which now starts in our Cosafa region, reflecting a strong focus on grassroots growth of the game,” Haiya said.
Haiya said following some notable achievements in his first term, Motsepe deserves another term.
“Having seen such positive changes, we believe continuity in leadership will drive even greater success. For this reason, Cosafa has committed to supporting Dr. Motsepe’s candidacy in the upcoming March 2025 election,” he said.
Motsepe, a close ally of Fifa president Gianni Infantino, has already announced his intention to seek re-election.
The South African billionaire has already received backing from several associations on the continent.
Safa president Danny Jordaan was quoted by South African media as saying the continent has seen significant progress since Motsepe took over as Caf president.
“I have spoken to all presidents in the region. Some cannot be here with us but they sent some messages of support and we want to explain why we are supporting Dr Motsepe,” Jordaan said.
Motsepe took over as Caf president in 2021 unopposed after his challengers withdrew from the race.
