Netball Association of Malawi (Nam)’s new leadership has underlined its administrative acumen after securing free accommodation and meals for the Test Series between Malawi National Netball Team and South Africa.
Initially, Nam was expected to pay but renegotiated the deal after noticing gaps in the series’ contract.
The association’s general secretary Yamikani Khunga-Kauma said they renegotiated after realising that they will not get anything from commercial deals.
“After reviewing the contract signed by the previous administration, we renegotiated with South Africa Netball to pay for our accommodation and meals.
“These negotiations were based on the fact that all commercial and advertising rights were exclusive to the host, and also that there was no allowance for sharing of ticket sales revenue,” Khunga-Kauma said.
She described the arrangement as a milestone in their quest to reshape the sport.
“We have an addendum to the contract which stipulates their provision of accommodation and meals. It is a huge relief on our budget. Our worry will now just be on buying air tickets and other items,” Khunga-Kauma said.
Sports analyst Frank Chakanga described the move as commendable.
“The previous committee overlooked this important aspect and wanted to pile pressure on the government to provide huge sums of money for that cause. The impression we are getting is that the new committee seems to be knowledgeable on how to run the affairs of the team and the game in general,” Chakanga said.
The development comes after Nam secured a three-year K1 billion sponsorship from Nico Group for the Queens and Nico Top 12 Cup.
First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera also donated a set of uniform to the Queens.
