The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has given President Lazarus Chakwera 14 days to axe Minister of Homeland Security Ezekiel Ching’oma and Inspector General of Police Marlyn Yolamu from their positions.
This ultimatum follows the violent attacks on demonstrators and journalists in Lilongwe on Thursday 26th June 2025.
The attacks which involved panga-wielding individuals resulted in injuries and the burning of two vehicles at the Lilongwe Community Centre.
Speaking to MIJ Online MacHarven Ngwata Vice Chairperson for MLS said that security agency’s failure to protect citizens exercising their right to demonstrate warrants the removal of Ching’oma and Yolamu.
Ngwata stressed that the 14-day deadline is a call to action and if no response is forthcoming, MLS will take unspecified action.
