The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has issued a fresh caution on people who have not earned a doctoral degree through formal education.
This reminder comes in light of the conferment of honorary doctorates which are special recognitions and not equivalent to earned doctorates.
According to a press statement signed by Dr. Estone Sambo, Chairperson for NCHE said that honorary doctorates are not the same as academic doctorates earned through formal study.
Sambo further indicated that in view of this, recipients of honorary doctorates should not be addressed as “Doctor” in writing or orally.
Meanwhile Sambo has urged the media to respect this distinction and refrain from addressing honorary doctorate recipients as “Dr.”
