The Malawi chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi) has strongly condemned the brutal attacks on demonstrators, journalists and passersby at the foiled demonstrations in Lilongwe.
On Thursday, a group of panga-wielding individuals assaulted protesters and journalists plus burning vehicles in full view of police officers and soldiers.

In a press statement signed by Golden Matonga Chairperson for MISA Malawi they have expressed disappointment in the State, particularly the Malawi Police Service (MPS), for failing to decisively stop the violent groups by enforcing the law.
According to Matonga, several journalists including Aubrey Kuyere, Faith Kaunde and Mercy Matonga were assaulted and forced to delete pictures.
Matonga has since reminded President Lazarus Chakwera of their previous appeal on World Press Freedom Day to stop attacks on the right to assembly as guaranteed under Section 38 of the Constitution.
