The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is appealing for international intervention following a violent attack on peaceful protesters in Lilongwe that left several people injured, including a prominent protest leader.
The DPP alleges that the assault was carried out by individuals linked to the state, some reportedly armed with panga knives. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers disrupted a citizen-led demonstration while police and military personnel at the scene failed to intervene.
“This is a blatant violation of democratic rights,” said DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito. “It threatens national stability just months ahead of the September 16 elections.”
In response, the party has called on the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), Southern African Development Community (SADC), European Union (EU), Human Rights Watch, and foreign embassies to take urgent action. The DPP is urging the deployment of international observers or peacekeeping forces to help safeguard the electoral process and uphold democratic norms.
“An international presence would help deter further violence and restore public trust in the election process,” Mukhito added.
The DPP is also demanding a full, government-led investigation into the incident and the prosecution of those responsible. As of now, the authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the attack.
