Malawi National Football Team has fallen by a step on the latest world football body, Fifa, rankings but Football Association of Malawi (Fam) is confident the Flames would not plunge into free fall.
According to Fifa Rankings issued on Thursday, the Flames have dropped to position 132 from 131, having earlier moved three steps up from position 134 in November last year.
The development comes after the Flames lost two successive games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Malawi lost at home to Namibia 1-0 and away to Tunisia 2-0.
Flames coach Kalisto Pasuwa could not be reached for comment.
However, Fam Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said they were hoping that the Flames would break into the top 100 soon.
“As you recall we started well in November when we moved three steps up. We have met a slight hiccup but we will surely bounce back into the good lane. It is our wish that we should break into the top 100,” he said.
Retired footballer Kuruwa Ngwira said the Flames were lucky to drop by one step.
“It could have been worse because the Flames lost two competitive games. Otherwise, they need to get positive results in the remaining games of the qualifiers,” Ngwira said.
The Flames’ highest Fifa ranking is 58 which they attained in 1992 and the team’s lowest ranking 138.
