The World Life and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM) has called on primary school students from Zomba and Blantyre districts to lead in caring for natural resources.
WESM recently engaged students from Chinyaza Primary School in Zomba and Tafika Primary School in Blantyre in an Environmental Education Awareness Campaign.
The event, themed “Let’s Protect our Planet: Let’s Protect our Future,” aimed to educate students on ways to care for natural resources.
WESM Coordinator in Zomba, San Daniel Nkunga, emphasised the importance of teaching children about environmental conservation at a tender age, as the country’s future relies on them.
Nkunga highlighted the advantages of trees in human lives, including providing fresh air, attracting rainfall, and protecting houses against strong winds.
He encouraged students to report any instances of tree cutting to relevant authorities and join hands with WESM in the fight against natural resource destruction.
Primary School Education Advisor (PEA) for Chilipa Zone, Wilfred Mbendera, commended WESM for the awareness campaign, saying it would motivate students and teachers to start planting and protecting trees.
He, however, noted that grazing animals around schools hindered these efforts and asked chiefs to help by punishing those responsible.
WESM Coordinator in Blantyre, Gilbert Nkhwanga, emphasised the significance of environmental management and encouraged students and teachers to be at the forefront of tree protection.
He noted that the areas of Lundu and Chilipa were prone to charcoal burning, which facilitated tree destruction.
Pemphero White, a Standard 7 student from Chinyaza Primary School, expressed gratitude for the learning experience, saying she had gained knowledge on how to care for the environment.
During the event, WESM donated fruit tree seedlings, vegetable seeds, footballs, water cans and environmental education books to the two schools.
