Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has advised its affiliate National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) to start lobbying for sponsors to partner the association in the promotion of women’s football in the country.
Fam Competitions and Marketing Committee Chairperson Felister Dossi made remarks during the launch of the 2024 Goshen-Fam Women’s Regional League at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.
Dossi said Fam spends about K52 million on the regional leagues annually but time has come for NWFA to be proactive in sourcing sponsorship.
“We are grateful that women’s football is slowly getting momentum in the country from where we were some years back.
“We, as Fam, are also thankful to Goshen City for the sponsorship but let me also take this opportunity to remind our colleagues at NWFA to embark on a sponsorship drive for the women’s game because, in future, we may decide to take out this money and channel it towards grassroots football development,” Dossi said.
Taking her turn, NFWC Chairperson Adellaide Migogo expressed joy at having the regional league launched for the year 2024.
“We have migrated from having eight teams per region to 10 teams now. This is one thing that brings stiff competition among the teams. We are also happy with the support by guardians, who are tirelessly pushing the girl child to play football. This is also a motivating factor to most of the players,” Migogo said.
During the launch, Southern Region champions Kukoma Ntopwa beat Bvumbwe Women 11-0 to kick start their title defence on a high.
This year’s champion will receive K4 million, with the runners-up pocketing half the amount.
