Mighty Mukuru Wanderers are set to appoint Bob Mpinganjira as permanent coach on a one-year contract with an option to extend.
The decision was made during the team’s stakeholders meeting in Blantyre Wednesday.
But Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi while confirming about the meeting, insisted the decision has not been finalised.
“A decision will be made in due course. Once the decision has been made, the club will announce the details,’’ Ndovi said.
Times Sport has established that Bob will also be given freedom to appoint his backroom staff. Additionally, he will be given a chance to bolster the squad ahead of the 2025 season.
The decision to appoint Bob comes barely two weeks after the club’s president Thomson Mpinganjira said he was convinced that he was the only local person for the job.
’’If we are going to have a Malawian, then it will be Bob. If not Bob, then we will get someone abroad. We will look at investing in Bob,’’ Mpinganjira said recently.
But Bob was not answering his mobile phone after several attempts Wednesday. National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) General Secretary Davie Mpima urged clubs to invest in local coaches.
’’Our coaches have shown a lot of potential. If properly trained, they can match some of the foreign coaches,’’ Mpima said.
Bob will replace Meke Mwase who resigned from his post due to personal reasons towards the end of the season. He was appointed interim coach until the end of the season.
The former striker helped the team win the 2024 Ibongetse Castel Challenge Cup following a 1-0 victory over Mzuzu City Hammers at Bingu National Stadium.
For winning the cup, Wanderers pocketed K55 million whereas Hammers got K25 million. The Lali Lubani outfit has expressed interest in participating in this year’s Caf Confederation Cup.
Wanderers last participated in the Caf Champions League in 2018 but they were eliminated in the first preliminary round after 6-1 loss on aggregate to AS Vita from Democratic Republic of Congo.
