Malawi Sports Awards nominations for 2024 are expected to undergo verification process ahead of the event slated for Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi on February 28 2025.
Malawi National Council of Sports Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said this after the institution successfully collected nominations from stakeholders.
Ntulumbwa expressed satisfaction with the response from sports associations and journalists in submitting nominees for various sporting categories for the Malawi Sports Awards.
“The council received nominations from sports associations affiliated with it, sports journalists through their media houses, and the Sports Writers’ Association,” he said
The nomination process began in November 2024 and closed on January 5 2025.
Ntulumbwa said, the next stage is to critically analyse the nominated names. “After receiving the nominations, several steps will be taken to identify the winner in each category. The first stage is shortlisting, where the received nominees undergo a review to ascertain their eligibility for the awards.
“The second stage is adjudication, which involves evaluating the shortlisted nominees to identify the top three finalists for each category,” he said.
Ntulumbwa said thirdly, the selection stage involves choosing the winners from the shortlisted top three nominees for each category.
“Then comes the public voting stage, where the public will vote for their choice among the three nominees for each category, with the public vote constituting 30 percent of the final score. Lastly, the aggregation stage will determine the final winner based on the highest score (70 percent committee, 30 percent public),” he said.
Forteen sporting categories will be contested at this year’s awards, including Junior Female Sportsperson of the Year (up to the age of 20), Junior Male Sportsperson of the Year (up to the age of 20), National Team of the Year, Best Executed Sport Development Programme of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability, Sportsman of the Year with a Disability, Sportswoman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Coach of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year – Print, Sports Journalist of the Year – Electronic, Sports Association of the Year, Sports Administrator of the Year and Sportsperson of the Year.
