Tambala Cup not about politics— Moses Kunkuyu

Information and Digitalisation Minister Moses Kunkuyu has denied using the newly launched K10 million Tambala Cup to garner support for a parliamentary seat for Blantyre West Constituency.

Kunkuyu, speaking during the launch of the cup at Kumanda Village, Traditional Authority Kuntaja in Chileka, Blantyre, said his mission is to help promote critical thinking among youths.

“I am minister under President Lazarus Chakwera who is also president of the Malawi Congress Party and being the party’s campaign director, party members will always follow me. This is pure sports and nothing else. If it was about politics I would have targeted my constituency rather than focussing on the entire district,” Kunkuyu said.

Taking his turn, Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) General Secretary Dailes Kachala hailed Kunkuyu for the sponsorship.

“We will make sure that every tambala put in this cup is used for its intended purpose. On behalf of Football Association of Malawi, I would like to thank the minister for the sponsorship which will go a long way in developing football,” Kachala said.

Meanwhile, Blantyre District Football Committee Vice Chairperson Sadatie Bonzo disclosed that the Tambala Cup would start next week.

“We have already started teams’ registration and we are in the course of finalising. By end of the week we should be able to get started,” Bonzo said.

Tambala Cup will draw teams from Mpemba, Soche, Lunzu, Chileka, Nancholi, Machinjiri, Mbayani and Bangwe, among others.
