Sico Holdings pumps K7.5 million into international bout

The international bout between Malawi’s blossoming boxer Hannock Phiri and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) boxer Regen Champion continues to get support from companies, with Sico Holdings Limited donating K7.5 million towards it Wednesday.

The highly anticipated bout is scheduled for this Saturday at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

Sico Holdings General Manager Mathews Mughogho said the company was excited to be associated with the growth of boxing in Malawi.

“We want to take the sport to the next level. We know boxing has potential to grow but we need to invest more resources in it,” Mughogho said.

The partnership between the stable and the company started long time ago.

Early this year, the company donated K4 million for the holding of a similar event held at Kamuzu Institute for Sports.

On his part, New Dawn Technical Adviser Brighton Mwando hailed Sico Holdings for the timely donation.

“We are very happy that the corporate world has supported us despite economic challenges the country is facing. It is not easy to get sponsors for boxing,” Mwando said.

The donation from Sico will, among other things, go towards boxers’ fees and officials’ expenses.

The weigh-in for the boxers is slated for this Friday in Lilongwe.

Apart from Sico Holdings, New Dawn has received support from PLMB Engineering and Insight Consulting Group of Lilongwe.

Meanwhile, New Dawn Managing Director Michael Chimaliza has said all is set for the international bout.

“All logistical arrangements are at an advanced stage. We are appealing to boxing fans to come in large numbers to watch the fight,” Chimaliza said.

According to Chimaliza, boxers from Blantyre are expected to arrive in Lilongwe today.

In the main supporting bout, Yamikani Mtambo will face Yamikani Mkandawire.
