Rose Kabzere scores on Montpellier debut

Malawi Women’s National Football Team starlet Rose Kabzere scored on her debut for French side Montpellier Herault Sports Club (women) in a 7-0 thumping of Guingamp on Saturday.

The 18-year-old Malawian was introduced in the second half and made an impact.

She netted her first goal for the French club in the 81st minute when she headed in a corner kick.

Ifeoma Onumonu opened the scoring for Montpellier before Soufiya Ngueleu and Lina Khelif scored a brace each. Kethna Louis scored the other goal.

In an interview from her base Sunday, Kabzere expressed delight at her first goal for the club.

“It feels great to score my first goal for the club. The goal has motivated me to do well,” Kabzere said.

She joined the French club on a three-year deal from Lilongwe’s Ascent Academy.

The academy’s director of operations Thom Mkolongo said he was also excited with Kabzere’s performance in France.

“It is good news for us. Rose is a very good player and I believe she will score more goals in France,’’ Mkolongo said.

Kabzere was included in the Scorchers squad for the 2024 Cosafa Women’s Championship but did not take part as she was settling down in France.

Following the victory, Montpellier moved to position six on the log table with 10 points from six matches, five points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain but the latter have a game in hand.

Tabitha Chawinga’s Olympique Lyonnais are second on the log table with 13 points from five matches.

Chawinga already opened her scoring account for Lyon.

The Scorchers captain won the Golden Boot award with 19 goals while on loan at PSG from Chinese side Wuhan Jianghan.

On top of that, Tabitha won the Player of the Season award.
