
The Tobacco Commission has confiscated tobacco bales weighing over seven thousand kilograms in an operation aimed at combating illegal vending.
According to Tobacco Commission, of the confiscated tobacco, the biggest volume, 5,400 kgs, was intercepted in Lilongwe.
This is followed by 1,400 and 1,000 kgs confiscated in Mzuzu and Kasungu, respectively in the operation jointly conducted with the Malawi Police Service.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Terephorus Chigwenembe Spokesperson for Tobacco Commission said the aim of patrols was to deal with illegal tobacco vending and smuggling which is continuing in this year’s Tobacco selling season.
According to Chigwenembe, under the Tobacco Industry Act of 2024, it is illegal to buy tobacco or to export the crop without a license issued by the Tobacco Commission.
