Multichoice wages war against piracy

By Jimmy Chazama

MultiChoice Malawi has bemoaned piracy saying it was denying the creative industry of its much needed revenue. It has since indicated that it was taking the necessary strides to combat it including using Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered monitoring systems as well as collaborating with enforcement partners such as Copyright Society of Malawi.

Speaking during a showcase in Lilongwe on Wednesday, MultiChoice Malawi Managing Director Averess Ndlovu Chella said they have intensified efforts to tackle various forms of piracy such as cable, streaming and cross-border violations.

Ndlovu Chella called upon people to utilise legal platforms like DStv, Gotv and Showmax saying it is crucial to funding local productions, supporting African talent and ensuring the sustainable future of the creative sector.

“Our goal is to make entertainment accessible and convenient for our customers. To achieve this, we are embracing the digital era and partnering with the government to create a thriving creative industry. We believe that supporting local talent and combating piracy are crucial to our success,” she said.

Chella, who reaffirmed MultiChoice’s commitment to creating content for Africa by Africa, said they have improved their service products this year, including DStv for Business, DStv Stream and the self-service app (My DStv App).

The annual showcase event aims at highlighting the company’s products and value to the media. Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Digitalisation Baldwin Chiyamwaka said that the ministry was developing a broadcasting policy to create a favourable environment for content developers.

He spoke volumes of partnerships between players in the promotion of local content as well as raising awareness about piracy.

“Policies are the starting point, but partnerships are also crucial. We will continue, as government, to support media platforms like DStv, because we know that more local content will continue to be aired on their platforms,” Chiyamwaka said.

The media showcase also follows new packages prices that the company announced recently, effective April 1 2025. The development also comes barely a month after a Malawian television drama series titled Pa Mango Lodge premiered recently and it airs on DStv and GOtv every Thursday.
