Renowned actor Tumpe Mtaya, popularly known as Phwedo, has been arrested for allegedly having sexual activity with a minor pending medical examination on the victim.
Central West Region Police spokesperson Foster Benjamin confirmed the development yesterday, saying Phwedo was being kept at Lilongwe Police Station. As we went to press on Tuesday, Benjamin said they were still waiting for the results of the medical examination.
“What happened is that on 7 February 2025, Phwedo met the victim at Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe, where there was a theatre festival. Then, on her birthday on February 18, 2025, Phwedo is alleged to have slept with the victim and that, since then, he has been sleeping with her at his house,” Benjamin said.
He said the issue was reported to the police by her mother. Phwedo came to the limelight for acting in the award-winning film School Days.
He is also part of the cast in the movie Welcome to Maula Prison, to be premiered early next month in Lilongwe—to be followed by other premieres in Blantyre and Mzuzu.
