Fama, MTC sign memorandum of understanding

Film Association of Malawi (Fama) and Malawi Tourism Council (MTC) on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), a move they say is aimed at promoting and developing the country’s film and tourism sectors.

The development comes barely two months after MTC signed another MoU with rapper Tay Grin as its ambassador for tourism.

Fama and MTC’s partnership, which runs for three years and is renewable based on performance, will see filmmakers taking up the task of telling authentic stories about Malawi as part of promoting tourism.

Under the deal, MTC is expected to facilitate access to filming locations and provide resources such as hotels and tourist sites at no cost.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Fama President Dorothy Kingston said it was high time movies produced locally showcased the country’s tourist attraction sites.

“The films that we will be producing now will be appealing because the places where we will be shooting will be well-branded. “With MTC’s involvement, we expect smoother access to key tourism sites like lakes and hotels, reducing potential challenges when shooting our movies,” Kingston said.

The Fama leader also said the partnership would help in revenue generation and job creation since more films would be produced.

MTC Executive Director Memory Kamthunzi said the partnership would help them develop attractive sites that would draw tourists and filmmakers from other countries. “We want to show the world how beautiful Malawi is through films and stories.

Our country has many interesting stories to tell and this partnership will help us share them,” Kamthunzi said.

She further said the partnership would ensure that community members benefit directly from film productions, thereby fostering a sense of ownership and pride among them.

Fama and MTC have also agreed to initiate film tourism festivals that would unite filmmakers from various countries.
