
The 2025 Easter Theatre Festival starts today through to Sunday with activities set for two venues—Alliance Francaise de Blantyre and M-Cinema. Led by Solomonic Peacocks, the sixth edition of the three-day festival officially opens Friday night at M-Cinema with performances coming from poet Babangoni Chisale followed by comedies from Ching’aning’ani and Mr Jokes, who will share the stage with Zambian comedians, with South Africa’s Kendiboni Malaudzi closing the curtain.
Before the official opening at M-Cinema, Alliance Francaise de Blantyre will this morning, through to the afternoon, play host to a children’s workshop followed by performances from, among others, Courageous Kids, Let’s Rise Theatre, Shando, Merpec, Hepheziba Arts, Yona Mlakatuli and Luckier Chikopa.
The second day, to feature comedy and dance workshops in the morning at Alliance Francaise de Blantyre, will be followed by performances at Alliance Francaise de Blantyre from, among others, Judges Cultural Troupe, Art Sustainability Lab, Luna Ballet, Young Travellers, Women in Theatre, Nzeka Arts and Katarina Mota from Portugal.
The festival closes on Sunday at the same venue, kicking off with art business and storytelling workshops in the morning before performances of among others, Dikamawoko, Hudson Chamasowa, Emancipation, Upile, YDC, Kwathu, Solomonic Peacocks and Mpho Ya Badimo from South Africa in the afternoon.
Festival Coordinator and Solomonic Peacocks Director McArthur Matukuta said yesterday they were set for the festival, which he described as family entertainment.
“Let people come and sample theatre, dance and poetry as well as participate in workshops,” Matukuta, who is also an actor and playwright, said. The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Celebrate Culture through Theatre, through the project titled ‘Enhancing Sustainable Theatre Development ’ supported by Copyright Society of Malawi through Copyright Fund and other partners.
