Mlowe Arts Festival warms up

By Jimmy Chazama:

Mlowe Arts Festival made a step ahead of its inaugural event slated for November 16-17 2024 in Rumphi District, when it successfully held a fundraising show at Orchid in Area 12 in Lilongwe last Friday.

The event acted as a warm-up to the festival with the impressive audience enjoying performances from different acts.

Led by Pamoza Social Enterprise, the fundraising show gave people an insight into what is in store for them during the main event when they sampled performances from acts such as Mashallo, Richsax, Ayap, Patrick Chimbewa, DTK Afro, Amarock Telecasca, Dee Satha, DJ Tawa and Keist.

Storyteller Doreen Mwenelupembe, who performed at the event, said she was happy to perform at the event describing art as a powerful tool in addressing social issues.

“I enjoyed every moment of the event and I am looking forward to the main festival as well,” Mwenelupembe said.

Pamoza Social Enterprise Director Annabelle Jaccard hailed people for turning up in large numbers describing the event as the beginning of their cultural doings in tackling important issues affecting society in order to bring about change.

“We are grateful for the support and we look forward to delivering a transformative experience during the upcoming Mlowe Cultural Arts Festival, it is all about raising awareness on mental health and gender-based violence through arts,” Jaccard said.

Random interviews with attendees indicated they relished the show whose guest of honour was Lilongwe City Mayor Esther Sagawa.

Organisers have since called for more support ahead of the main event, which aims at raising awareness for mental health and gender-based violence affecting Rumphi District and bordering districts as well as provide a platform for the communities to share their experiences.

The festival is expected to feature several activities including traditional dances such as Malipenga and Mbotosha.
