Football Legends Association (FLA) will use K10.4 million to roll out the first phase of medical aid for former players who fall under the category of legends.
FLA Board Chairperson Jim Kalua said the proceeds from the recent international friendly match between Malawi and Zambia would be used to implement the first phase.
“The first phase will cost us about K10.4 million in premiums for one year. We are rolling out the medical aid scheme. We promised stakeholders that proceeds from the game would go towards this initiative,” Kalua said.
FLA has 134 members; however, beneficiaries will be categorised according to their status as legends.
“In the meantime, priority will be given to senior, paid-up members. Then we will consider committed members, followed by those not on any medical scheme.
“We encourage legends to commit by paying a monthly membership fee to be part of the association’s programmes,” Kalua said.
He added that stakeholders had been notified about the arrangement.
FLA generated about K18 million in gate revenue and raised over K6 million through replica sales, having sold more than 113 items at K55,000 each.
FCB Nyasa Big Bullets National Supporters Director Stone Mwamadi lauded FLA for the initiative.
“It is a good programme because some of the legends or retired football players struggle to access proper medical aid,” Mwamadi said.
The national legends body was formed to help improve the plight of former players by, among other things, introducing medical and funeral cover.
