The Lilongwe District Council has officially written to Citizens for Credible Elections (CfCE), permitting them to hold an anti-MEC leadership demonstration on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
The development follows a consultative meeting held in the Council Chamber on Tuesday, where CfCE representatives and key stakeholders, including law enforcement and council officials, agreed on terms for the march.
The Council, through District Commissioner Lawford Palani, confirmed that the demonstration can proceed and outlined specific guidelines to ensure order and public safety. Among the key agreements is that the CfCE petition will be delivered to the District Commissioner’s office in Area 3, and that a senior official from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) must be present during its presentation.
The Malawi Police Service have been urged to escort the demonstrators, supported by 100 CFCE-appointed marshals in reflectors, who will help maintain order and identify any troublemakers within the crowd.
The route for the march starts at the Community Ground, passing through Mchesi, Kamuzu Central Hospital Interchange, Amina House roundabout, then via Chilambula Road to Lilongwe Hotel, and will end at the District Commissioner’s office.
The planned demonstration is part of CFCE’s growing campaign demanding the immediate resignation of MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja and Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi.
The group accuses the two of presiding over a compromised electoral system and has vowed to continue mobilising until they step down. They question MEC’s clinging to the Smartmatic machine and refusal to audit the voter roll.
