The Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) has been divided into two factions after the association’s general secretary (GS), Masiya Nyasulu, challenged incumbent Chauka Mwasinga ahead of the body’s elective annual general meeting, which is scheduled for Mzuzu on February 15.
NRFA opened the nomination window on January 4, which will close on January 14.
Nyasulu confirmed his candidacy, saying he has vast experience in football administration, having served as NRFA’s GS for a decade.
“It is time for me to face a new challenge. I have declared my interest to contest but the affiliates have the power to choose me,” Nyasulu said.
On his part, Chauka, who took over the mantle after Lameck Zetu Khonje was elected Football Association of Malawi’s second vice president in December 2023, said he was interested in defending his seat.
“If the affiliates want my services to continue, who am I to say no?” Chauka asked.
Chauka served as NRFA’s treasurer for over a decade.
Meanwhile, Vice GS Desire Bellings Kiwombwe has expressed interest in contesting for the position of GS while executive members Ralph Kasililika and Etimark Luwanja intend to vie for the position of vice chairperson.
A total of 28 delegates from all seven districts are expected to attend the elective assembly.
