FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have been handed a timely boost after Football Association of Malawi (Fam) released K100 million ahead of their participation in the 2024 Caf Champions League next month.
This comes a few weeks after Fam President Fleetwood Haiya pledged to support local clubs with a K100 million package for their participation in continental showpiece.
The move is aimed at motivating local clubs to participate in the both Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup.
However, the money is coming from Confederation of African Football (Caf) for participating in the 2023 Caf Champions League.
In an interview Tuesday, Haiya hailed Caf for walking the talk to support local clubs.
“We are excited that Caf fulfilled its promise. We believe this will motivate local clubs to participate in Caf competitions. This is a commendable gesture from Caf. This will also be extended to women’s football teams,” Haiya said.
Ascent Academy, who will take part in this year’s Caf Champions League/ Cosafa qualifier will also qualify for the package if they earn a ticket to Caf Champions League.
Bullets interim Chief Executive Officer Albert Chigoga said they received the money from Fam last week.
“Indeed, we got the money. This is a big boost for us as we are preparing for this year’s Caf Champions League,” Chigoga said.
Bullets were drawn against Zambian champions Red Arrows in the first preliminary round of this Caf Champions League.
However, Bullets risk playing their home matches away from home after Caf banned Bingu National Stadium from hosting Caf Champions League matches due to its poor condition.
The winner between Bullets and Arrows will face Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) giants TP Mazembe in the second preliminary round.
For a fifth straight year, Bullets will be the only local club to participate in the Caf Champions League.
Since 2019, no local team has taken part in the Caf Confederation Cup. Then, Masters Security took part in the tournament.
Last year, Bullets reached the second preliminary round of the Caf Champions League after beating Dragon FC from Equatorial Guinea 3-0 on aggregate.
But they were eliminated in the second preliminary round following 5-0 defeat to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) giants TP Mazembe.
The People’s Team lost 1-0 at Bingu National Stadium before 4-0 defeat at Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi.
