Dzaleka celebrates youth day with talent showcase

By Jimmy Chazama:

Art was the centre of attraction as youths utilised it to tackle issues affecting society at events marking International Youth Day held at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District on Monday.

Through a talent show on the itinerary, young people showcased skills in poetry, dance, theatre and music, among others, exposing talents that exist at the refugee camp.

The talent show, which attracted newly crowned Miss Culture Dzaleka, Shakira Clementine Phillimon, featured a dynamic lineup of performances such as Bmax Official, Fabreezy and Sowers Dance Crew.

Dzaleka Refugee Camp, through Tumaini Letu, organised the event in partnership with Wusc– Malawi under the theme ‘From Clicks to Progress’.

One of the performers, Maestro Tite, known by his stage name Alliance Ombeni—who is a singer from the Democratic Republic of Congo—said he was happy to perform at the event.

“I am thankful to Tumaini Letu for giving us a chance to showcase our talents. We have a lot to offer, but just lack exposure,” Tite said.

Tite, who is also a guitarist and music teacher, and friend Tuyubahe Edidia, a Burundian, performed Eli Njuchi’s song titled ‘Tempolale’.

Tumaini Letu representative Bryce Chawiya said through the talent show, refugees showed that there is massive talent at Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

“The energy from the artists was electric and the talent on display was truly inspiring. It was a memorable occasion that highlighted the creativity and potential of the youth,” Chawiya said.

Phillimon praised the performers for a good showdown.

“I am impressed with the level of talent we have here at the camp. These young people are truly inspiring and I believe they have a bright future,” she said.
