Newly elected Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) Athletes Commission Chairperson Asimenye Simwaka has disclosed plans to lobby for support for the welfare of athletes to advance in their careers.
The Malawi Defence Force athlete was elected chairperson on December 14, replacing swimmer Brave Liffa.
Asimenye said Malawi has a lot of talented athletes who can win medals at major events if well supported.
“It is for this reason that I feel I should use my new position to lobby for support. Most local athletes in various disciplines have the potential to do well at the international level however they seldom receive sponsorship.
“For an athlete to do well at major events, it starts with welfare. If the athlete is well looked, chances of doing well are always high,” she said.
Asimenye said during her tenure she would be visiting different districts to sensitize youngsters to pick up sport codes of their choices.
“The country has a lot of potential. Sadly, most youngsters do not realise their potential due to lack of mentors. Together with my fellow members, we would be visiting schools to sensitize youngsters to pick sporting codes of their choice and then encourage them to nurture the talent,” she said.
Moc Secretary General Henry Sakala said Asimenye would be representing athletes in Moc board.
“Her primary role is to lobby for welfare policies for all athletes. Through her, as the chairperson of Athletes Commission, Moc board would be able to appreciate issues to do with athletes,” Sakala said.
The Athletes Commission has the likes of Vice Chairperson Tayamika chang’anamino, Secretary General Jessica Mankhwenda, Vice Secretary General Areneo David, committee members Kefasi Kasten, Tereza Master and Amara Pinto.
