Ascent race against time on Caf tourney

Malawi National Women’s Football Champions Ascent Soccer are racing against time to register for the 2024 Caf Champions League/ Cosafa Qualifier slated for August 16-24 in Durban, South Africa.

The deadline for registration of teams is June 30.

This means Ascent have remained with three days to confirm their participation in the tournament.

However, Ascent Director of Operations Thom Mkolongo was confident of beating the deadline.

“We have already started the process and we are on course. We are working day and night to finalise the process to get the licence to take part in the competition,” Mkolongo said.

The board of Ascent already approved the team’s maiden appearance in the regional qualifiers which attract teams from Zambia, South Africa, Mozambique, Lesotho, Eswatini and Botswana among others.

Ascent qualified for the competition after winning the Goshen Fam Women’s Championship following a 1-0 victory over MDF Lionesses at Bingu National Stadium last month.

Mkolongo, who is also coach for the team, believes they have a good squad capable of withstanding the heat on the international stage.

“We might add some players depending on what we want. But there is no need to panic at the moment,’’ he said.

For Ascent to participate in the competition, they must pass Club Licencing requirements.

Football Association of Malawi Compliance Manager Casper Jangale said Ascent have already started the process of registration.

“We provided them with all the necessary documents and we are working closely with them,’’ Jangale said.

Ascent will become the second women’s football team from Malawi to participate in the qualifiers after Ntopwa.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women and Silver Strikers Ladies [then DD Sunshine] failed to take part in the tournament despite showing interest.
