The biannual Art in the Park, which is led by Wildlife Environmental Society of Malawi (Wesm), officially opened on Friday at Four Seasons Nursery in Lilongwe. It attracted 60 visual artists.

The three-day event, which ran under the theme ‘Nature is Our Home’, saw visual artists showcasing artworks. Art in the Park has proved to be one of the top platforms for visual artists, in terms of showcasing works as well as making sales.

Some of the artists on the lineup—namely Madalitso Ziwaoh, Tee Mlinga and Ellis Singano—indicated that the sales were not that good on the first and second day compared to the previous editions.

Lilongwe City Council Deputy Mayor Ruth Chingwalu, who was the guest of honour, commended organisers for promoting local talent and contributing to the city’s cultural development.

“We, as a city council, recognise the importance of art in enhancing the quality of life for our residents and promoting tourism. We will continue to support initiatives like these,” Chingwalu said.

On his part, Wesm Chairperson Nick Hall said they were encouraged by the artworks showcased, stressing that their focus this year was on “encouraging young people to pursue arts and crafts as a livelihood”.
