Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) might be crippled following the expiry of the term of office of the Sunduzwayo Madise-led board on November 14 2024.
However, Sports Council Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata insisted Wednesday that absence of the board would not affect operations.
He said all policy matters will be handled by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in the absence of the board.
“In the meantime, if there are issues which require the board, they will be referred to Ministry of Youth and Sports for policy guidance,’’ Kamata said.
Sports Council board has several duties including developing, promoting sports, advising government and other authorities on matters relating to sport and physical recreation.
Madise, a lawyer and University of Malawi deputy vice-chancellor, has served two terms as chairperson.
However, Madise, a respected sports administrator who is also one of the founding members of Super League of Malawi, asked for more time before commenting on the issue.
During his term, Madise introduced guidelines for sports associations to enhance efficiency. Among other guidelines, Sports Council introduced term limits for presidents of sports associations to two.
In addition, the guidelines state that all sports associations must have strategic plans and related implementation plan, produce a work plan and calendar of events.
The guidelines also state that associations must have an office with at least one permanent staff and physical address. All sports associations are also required to hold annual elective general assemblies as stipulated by their constitutions.
Sports analyst George Kaudza-Masina said despite the term of board expiring, it would not have any impact on its operations.
’’Yes, for corporate governance, the void might be felt in a way but not much,’’ he said.
