Silver Strikers tighten grip

Silver Strikers need nine points from their last five matches to win the 2024 TNM Super League title following a 1-6 thumping of Mafco at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe Wednesday.

Victory over Mafco means Silver maintained the four-point gap at the summit of the log table between them and second-placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, who registered a 1-0 victory over Bangwe All Stars at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Silver have 57 points from 25 matches and have a match in hand whereas Wanderers have 53 points from 26 matches.

However, both teams have remained with tough matches to wind up the campaign.

Silver, who last won the TNM Super League title in 2013, will face defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets at Silver Stadium this Saturday.

Apart from Bullets, Silver have remained with Wanderers, Fomo, Baka City and Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos.

On the other hand, Wanderers have remained with Silver, Mafco, Moyale and Creck Sporting Club.

For now, Silver are only fighting for the TNM Super League title after they were booted out of the Castel Challenge Cup following a 3-2 loss on post-match penalties to Panthers.

Silver finished the match with 10 men following a red card to Misheck Selemani.

Referee Mwayi Msungama had to be whisked away after some fans invaded the pitch.

Silver Coach Peter Mponda said his charges are in the comfort zone.

’’The boys are playing without pressure. We do not have any pressure and we have shown that we are a big team. We want to win this league’s title,’’ Mponda said.

Mafco Assistant Coach Jimmy Mzunga admitted that they were outplayed.

“We did not play our usual game and also conceded easy goals,” Mzunga said.

At Kamuzu Stadium, Misheck Bottoman scored the only goal of the match to keep Wanderers’ title hopes alive.

Wanderers Assistant Coach Bob Mpinganjira refused to throw in the towel.

“We will keep on fighting,” Mpinganjira said.

Elsewhere, Fomo defeated Creck 1-0 at Mulanje Park whereas Baka and Dedza shared the spoils after a 1-1 stalemate.
