Sabina Thom, TP Mazembe part ways

Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Sabina Thom has parted ways with Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) giants TP Mazembe on mutual agreement.

Thom, whose contract was set to expire in June this year, is now free to join any team.

In an interview Tuesday, Thom, who is currently with the Scorchers ahead of Zambia friendly matches, confirmed her departure from the reigning African women’s champions.

The striker posted an emotional farewell message to the Mazembe family on her Facebook page.

“I am filled with mixed emotions. It has been an absolute honour and privilege to wear @FC TP Mfemeni jersey and represent this prestigious club,” Thom said.

Thom said her memorable moments at Mazembe would last forever.

“We have lifted several trophies and these achievements are a testament to hard work and dedication.

“But beyond trophies and accolades, what I will cherish most are the relationships I have built with some of the teammates, coaches, staff and the fans. You have become my family and I will forever be grateful for the love and support you have shown to me,” she said.

Her departure from Mazembe comes a few weeks after Thom was linked with Moroccan side Club des Juenesses Ait Jazza.

The Moroccan club offered her a one-and-a-half-year contract but Mazembe refused to sell the striker.

Apart from Jazza, Tanzanian side Young Africans (Yanga) were also interested in signing the Malawian during the January transfer window.

Thom joined Mazembe on a two-year contract from Malawi Defence Force Lionesses in 2023.

Lionesses General Secretary Arnold Nizzah Jere was reluctant to comment on the matter.

“It will be difficult for me to comment because I do not have more information on the issue,” Jere said.

Mazembe officials were not readily available for their comments Tuesday.

While at Mazembe, Thom and compatriot Chimwemwe Madise helped the Lubumbashi-based outfit retain the Congolese Women’s Championship.

But Thom missed the Caf Women’s Champions League triumph as she did not travel to Morocco due to visa hitches.

Madise was part of the team.
