Egnat Katengeza formally charged for her sister’s murder

In a chilling development that has stunned residents of Lilongwe, the Malawi Police Service has formally charged Egnat Katengeza with the murder of her biological sister, Agnes Katengeza.

Egnat, who is currently being held on remand, was arrested after months of investigation into the suspicious death of her sister, which police now suspect was part of a financially motivated plot.

Speaking to Times360 Malawi, Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu confirmed the arrest and charge, emphasizing that the case has taken a new turn following fresh evidence.

Chigalu revealed that Egnat is believed to be the mastermind behind the murder, allegedly orchestrating the crime for undisclosed financial gains.

The case dates back to December, when police arrested 27-year-old Amos Katengeza, a stepbrother to the deceased, in connection with the same crime.

According to Chigalu, it was during Amos’ interrogation that he implicated Egnat as the main conspirator behind the gruesome act.

Despite the initial suspicion, police at that time opted to release Egnat following her interview, citing the need for further investigations to substantiate the claims.

“Since then, detectives have worked tirelessly, uncovering critical evidence that links Egnat directly to the murder,” said Chigalu.

The development marks a major breakthrough in the case, which had left many questions unanswered for months.

Though police have not yet disclosed the full details of the financial motive, the implication of close family members in such a heinous act has shocked the nation.

The Katengeza family now finds itself at the centre of a deeply disturbing tragedy, as legal proceedings begin against one of their own.

Egnat is expected to appear before court soon, where prosecutors are likely to present the newly gathered evidence that secured her indictment.

Meanwhile, law enforcement continues to urge the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its rightful course.

The case is being closely followed by human rights advocates and members of the public who are calling for justice for the slain Agnes Katengeza.
