Rastafarians in Lilongwe on Friday walked in honour of legendary Jamaican reggae musician Burning Spear, who is set to perform in the country on October 26 2024.

The veteran reggae musician, who has already performed in Zimbabwe, is expected to arrive in the country on October 25.

Led by the organisers of the One People Africa tour, the big walk began at Rastafarian Tabernacle in Area 17, took marchers to Kawale Nyahbinghi Theocracy Reign and concluded at Lilongwe Community Ground. On the menu for the walk included performances by Nyabingi Chanting Choir, Positive Yut and Komuniq, among others.

South Africa-based reggae musician Born Afrikan, who is also one of the members of the organising team, said the big walk was aimed at raising awareness about the concert and also the arrival of Burning Spear.

“This big walk is crucial in that we are informing people about the upcoming One People Africa Tour concert,” he said.

Born Afrikan, who has brought several Jamaican reggae musicians to the country including Morgan Heritage, added that they wanted to create excitement and anticipation among music lovers.

“This is a must-not-miss concert. People need to come and be part of history,” he said.

Regarding the concert, Born Afrikan said it was the first time that Burning Spear would be performing in Malawi, adding that it would be an opportunity for people to watch him live.

Speaking on behalf of the Rastafarian community, Priest and Chairperson for Nyahbinghi Kawale Centre, Alfred Mwanamanga, said they were excited that Burning Spear would be performing in the country.

“We, as Rastafarians, needed to be part of this big walk to spread love, unity and positivity, which aligns with our values and Burning Spear’s message,” Mwangama said.
