Ministry gets K7.1 billion for sports projects

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has been allocated K7.1 billion for projects in the proposed 2025-26 national budget.

This was disclosed when ministry officials made a presentation to members of the Parliamentary Committee on Social Welfare in Lilongwe Wednesday.

Out of the K7.1 billion, the Griffin Saenda Indoor Sports Complex has been allocated a lion’s share of K2.6 billion.

However, according to figures released last year, the facility needed an extra K7 billion to be completed after the change in scope of work.

The facility hosted netball and basketball matches during the 2022 Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games but the scope changed to accommodate sporting codes such as handball and tennis.

This could be a big boost to Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) as the country is expected to host the 2025 edition of Africa Netball Championship.

On the other hand, the Aquatic Sports Complex at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe has been allocated K1billion.

In addition, the two stalled projects have been allocated K80 million each for operations.

Ministry of Youth and Sports spokesperson Macmillan Mwale said the ministry would lobby for an increment.

“There is room for upward adjustment, especially on projects, so that we make considerable progress,” Mwale said.

In a related development, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers stadia have been allocated K1.9 billion each in the proposed budget.

This means the two projects are expected to resume this year after works stalled for four years due to lack of funds.

Meanwhile, Mzuzu Youth Centre and National Youth Service have been allocated K1 billion and K500 million, respectively.
