The Malawi Under-17 Girls National Football Team has been drawn in Group A of this year’s Cosafa Girls Championship alongside hosts Namibia and Comoros.
This follows the draw that was conducted in Johannesburg, South Africa, Thursday ahead of the tournament, scheduled for May 10 to 17 this year in Windhoek, Namibia.
The junior Scorchers would be hoping for an improved performance this year after they were eliminated in the group stages in South Africa last year.
Interestingly, Malawi and Namibia were in the same group in 2022 and last year.
In 2022, Malawi walloped Namibia 12-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
However, Namibia have shown some progress after they lost 6-1 to Malawi last year.
During the 2024 edition, Malawi lost by 4-2 margins to Madagascar and South Africa.
Former Scorchers captain Linda Kasenda is expected to lead the team again.
Malawi debuted in the 2022 Cosafa Under-17 Girls Championship where they won bronze on home soil.
The tournament was played during the 2022 Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games in Lilongwe.
Group B comprises defending champions Zambia, Mozambique and Mauritius.
Group C has last year’s runners-up Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
Lesotho debuted in the tournament last year and went on to the final but lost 15-0 to Zambia.
Zambia lifted last year’s trophy following a 15-0 victory over Lesotho in South Africa.
