Silver Strikers coaches ineligible for Caf tourney

TNM Super League defending champions Silver Strikers could be caught between a rock and a hard place as their technical panel members do not meet minimum requirements to lead a team in the Caf Champions League.

This comes at a time head coach Peter Mgangira and first assistant coach Mapopa Msukwa do not have a Caf A-Coaching Licence or above.

Both Mgangira and Msukwa can only be registered as assistant coaches in the Caf Champions League.

This means Silver would be forced to hire another qualified coach, specifically for the continental elite club competition this year.

Mgangira was not readily available for a comment Thursday.

In an interview Thursday, Silver Chief Executive Officer Patrick Chimimba said there was no need to panic.

“We will announce our plans at an appropriate time,” Chimimba said.

Silver are eligible to take part in the Caf Champions League after winning the 2024 TNM Super League.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Club Licencing and Compliance Manager Clement Kafwafwa said Caf A-coaching licence is mandatory for head coaches in Caf competitions.

“All local clubs are aware of the requirements. The standards are high in Caf competitions,” Kafwafwa said.

From 2022, Caf raised standards for coaches in both the Caf Champions League and the Confederations Cup.

For the Caf Champions League, Caf A or valid sister confederation “PRO” coaching licence is mandatory for the head coach whereas Caf B is mandatory for assistant coaches.

The requirements are also the same for the Confederations Cup.

In 2021, Caf declared 21 coaches, including Africans and Brazilians, unfit to be on the bench and lead teams in interclub competitions.

Mighty Wanderers expressed interest in taking part in the second-tier continental club competition this year after winning the Castel Challenge Cup.

Wanderers coach Bob Mpinganjira is eligible to lead the team in Confederations Cup as he has a Caf A-Coaching licence.

His assistant, Macdonald Mtetemera, is also qualified as he holds the same qualification.
