The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has underscored the need for improved internet penetration rate in the country, which currently stands at 36 percent.
Speaking during the licence renewal ceremony for Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) in Blantyre last week, Macra Director General Daud Suleman said the rate falls below the regional standard.
Suleman said enhancing digital connectivity is crucial for Malawi’s socio-economic development.
“Malawi’s current internet penetration rate is at 36 percent, which is significantly below the standard for internet penetration in the Sadc region and globally.
“We need to step up efforts to bridge this gap if we are to meet regional benchmarks and ensure that more Malawians are connected to the internet,” Suleman said.
He emphasised that enhancing digital connectivity is crucial for Malawi’s socio-economic development and pointed out that the introduction of 5G technology by TNM marks a vital step toward achieving better internet access across the country.
“5G is the bridge through which we can achieve widespread connectivity. Our goal is to ensure that every Malawian, regardless of location, has access to reliable internet services,” he added.
Suleman assured that Macra is committed to supporting initiatives that drive digital inclusion and create a more connected society.
TNM Chief Executive Officer Michel Hebert expressed pride in the company’s achievements and its ongoing commitment to innovation.
“As we celebrate nearly three decades of making history in Malawi, the renewal of our licence allows us to keep pushing boundaries in the telecom sector,” Hebert said.
He said the renewal comes as TNM celebrates nearly three decades of making history in Malawi.
TNM Board Chairman Ted Sauti Phiri said the renewed licences grant TNM a further 10 years to provide communication services, including the rollout of innovative solutions, to enhance internet access.
