Lovemore Fazili cautious as team dates Angola

Malawi Women’s National Football Team Coach Lovemore Fazili is refusing to let complacency creep into the minds of players as they prepare to face Angola in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) qualifiers last round in October this year.
Fazili said this Thursday after Angola progressed to the last round after defeating Zimbabwe 5-4 on post-match penalties at Lucas Moripe Stadium in South Africa on Wednesday.
Fazili described the fixture against Angola as tricky, saying they were no longer pushovers.
“It is a very good and tricky fixture considering that many expected Zimbabwe to progress. We need to plan well against Angola and continue playing friendly matches. Our players should be alert [and understand] what type of football Angola play,” Fazili said.
Fazili said he would do his homework before facing Angola.
“We have to analyse their strengths and weaknesses so that we do well against them. Angola are not a bad side, when we consider history, as they always compete at the Cosafa Cup,” he said.
The Scorchers registered a 3-2 victory over Zambia’s Copper Queens at Reiz Arena on Tuesday, two days after they lost 2-0 to the neighbours at the same venue.
Meanwhile, Kukoma Ntopwa Women’s FC owner and technical director Isaac Jomo Osman has said he believes that the Scorchers have what it takes to qualify for Wafcon finals.
“We have quality players that can beat Angola and qualify for the Wafcon finals.
“Currently, the Scorchers are one of the best teams in Africa,” Osman said.
Malawi last beat Angola 2-0 during the 2021 Cosafa Cup.
Scorchers progressed to the second preliminary round without kicking the ball following the withdrawal of Congo Brazzaville due to lack of preparations.
The winner of the two-legged matches will qualify to the 2026 Wafcon finals to be staged in Morocco.
