Kabula Diaries unveils festival

Kabula Diaries—an outfit that has been in the limelight hosting activities such as music, poetry, movies, open mic sessions and workshops at M-Cinema in Blantyre— on Monday announced the introduction of a festival.

The two-day annual festival, set to be running in June at Echo’s Park in Chileka, Blantyre, will this year be held from June 6 to 7.

Looking refreshed and focused, the festival’s director Prince Chikweba, wearing a golf shirt engraved Kabula Festival and in the company of other officials as well as its face in award-winning DJ Joy Nathu, said they were ready to add a new and unique festival to the country’s arts calendar.

He said the festival had maintained the name Kabula, as the commercial city is known, to race with its spirit while serving people with all the much-needed fun.

“We have been hosting events, where we have offered people a different environment when it comes to entertainment. Now we are taking it further to give them a festival,” Chikweba said.

He later hiked with the media through the scenic life of Echo’s Park, giving insights into how the festival’s design will look like and the stages.

“We will have workshops, poetry, fashion and music on the menu. So, we will be accommodating everyone,” Chikweba, who is well-known for managing musician Eli Njuchi, said.

He also revealed that they would have another big stage closer to the man-made dam which will feature music performances.

He added that through Kabula Festival, whose target is to start with less than 40 artists, they wanted people to have fun in a safe environment and in winter.

“We also want to inspire a new generation of artists and give them a platform to showcase their works. Echo’s Park has a beautiful environment where people can stay closer to nature and be inspired.

“There is also a man-made dam where they can ride boats and experience something not at the lake but within the city and even closer to the airport,” he said.

Echo’s Park Managing Director Nathan Chitenje said they were happy to host their first ever festival at their place.

“This is the first time for us to host a festival and we are looking forward to this mission. We are excited to partner Kabula Diaries in this event, which is part of uplifting tourism,” Chitenje said.

He said Kabula Festival was a proper platform for promoting and preserving culture.

“Seventy percent of the materials we use here are from Malawi. There is a need to embrace talent and, so, we want families to come and experience Echo’s Park,” Chitenje said.
