Gabadinho Mhango earns Marumo Gallants a point

Malawi National Football Team striker Frank Gabadinho Mhango earned Marumo Gallants a point in a 2-2 stalemate against Chippa United at Buffalo Municipality Stadium in East London on Saturday night.

Mhango netted the equaliser for 10-man Gallants in the 54th minute.

“The visitors managed to profit from a set-piece situation, with Mhango slotting the ball home with a header from close range,” SuperSport.com reported.

Edgar Manaka gave Gallants the lead from the penalty spot but Eva Nga levelled the scores midway into the first half.

Justice Chabalala put Chippa in front three minutes before the break.

But Mhango salvaged a point for Gallants.

This is Mhango’s fourth goal in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership.

The Flames striker was delighted to earn his side a point.

“It is always good to score a goal but the most important thing is to help the team,” he said.

The former FCB Nyasa Big Bullets striker joined Gallants at the start of the season after Moroka Swallows sold their Premiership status to the Free- State-based side.

While at Swallows, Mhango scored six goals last season.

Mhango moved to South Africa in 2014 when he joined Bloemfontein Celtic.

Since then, he has played for several clubs including Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits, Amazulu and Golden Arrows.

At Pirates, he won the Golden Boot award after scoring 16 goals during the 2019-20 season.

South Africa-based Malawian sports journalist Benjamin Nyirenda hailed Mhango for his impact in the 2-2 draw.

“He showed his quality throughout the game. It was a tough game but he rose to the occasion when it mattered the most,” Nyirenda said.

Mhango is the only recognised Malawian player in the Betway Premiership this season.

Another Malawian striker Khuda Muyaba has joined second-tier side Venda Football Academy on a short-term deal.
