Ekhaya have moved closer to TNM Super League promotion after beating Mighty Wanderers Reserve 2-0 at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre in the round of 8 playoffs on Monday.
The Premier League leaders received a timely boost after fellow title contenders Red Lions dropped points, being held to a goalless draw by Nyambadwe United at Kamuzu Stadium.
Following these results, Ekhaya must beat Nyambadwe Thursday to lift the ThumbsUp Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) League Premier Division title and secure TNM Super League promotion.
Ekhaya top the league table with 28 points from 12 games and if they win one of their remaining two matches, they will be crowned champions.
The Lions lie second with 23 points and can finish the season with 29 points if they win their remaining two games.
Ekhaya Coach Moses ‘Luba’ Chavula said they will not rest on their laurels.
“We are treating each game as a final because we want to win the championship and compete in the Super League,” the former Flames left-back said.
Meanwhile, SRFA Vice General Secretary Kingsley Simbeye said the battle for promotion was intense.
“As it stands, anything can happen. The race is tight, as all the teams are giving it their all,” Simbeye said.
Tomorrow, Ekhaya will face Nyambadwe at Kamuzu Stadium, while the Lions will entertain Wanderers Reserve at Balaka Stadium.
