Donor cuts impact LGBTQ+ community in Malawi

Donor cuts impact LGBTQ+ community in Malawi

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) community in Malawi is facing significant challenges due to donor suspension and cuts, resulting in reduced access to essential services.

Kachimanga: We are worried.

According to George Kachimanga, CEO of the Social Justice Foundation (SJF), the cuts have severely impacted healthcare, safe spaces, legal support, and empowerment programs.

Kachimanga noted that services such as emergency response for gender-based violence and mental health have been scaled down or shut down entirely.

This year’s Pride Month aims to highlight the violent reality faced by the LGBTQ+ community, including arrests and brutality. Statistics reveal 33 verified cases of violence in Mangochi alone between April 2024 and January 2025.

Malawi, a conservative country in Southern Africa, criminalizes LGBTQ+ activities, exacerbating the community’s vulnerabilities.
