Brighton Munthali cancels Blue Eagles contract

Seasoned goalkeeper Brighton Munthali has terminated his contract with Blue Eagles, accusing the club of breaching it, Malawi News Sport has learnt.

The development comes barely three weeks after Munthali helped Eagles return to the TNM Super League after emerging as Chipiku Central Region Football Association Premier Division champions.

In a letter, which Malawi News Sport has seen, Munthali alleges that the club did not honour K750,000 as part of the signing on fees.

He also accused the club of not paying him game bonuses for 15 matches in which he featured.

“I have made several attempts through the team manager regarding the financial discrepancies but I have not received any positive feedback.

“Given these circumstances, I feel compelled to terminate my contract with Blue Eagles to explore other avenues,” the letter reads.

However, Eagles Chief Administration Officer Muhammad Ali while confirming receipt of the letter said they are consulting their legal department to map the way forward.

“I can confirm that Brighton Munthali has written to Blue Eagles requesting termination of his contract. The club will convene with its legal counsels for guidance. Our stakeholders will be updated on this issue,” he said

Meanwhile, local scout Haroon Cassim said Munthali might have a case as regards the matter.

“Article 14 of FIFA’s Regulations states that a player can terminate their contract if the club fails to pay the player’s wages for more than 3 months or if the club fails to pay the player’s bonuses or signing-on fees within the agreed timeframe.

However, Cassim said the player must follow the proper procedures, which includes notifying the club in writing of the non-payment and giving the team a reasonable timeframe to pay the outstanding amount.
